The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog brings Jeff Koons’ reflective sculpture into haute horlogerie, combining limited production with a distinctly sculptural approach to watch design.
Hublot has created the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons, a 42 mm watch that translates the artist’s balloon-animal forms into a sculptural timepiece. The collaboration is offered in polished stainless steel, red anodised aluminium and blue anodised aluminium, with each edition limited to 200 examples. Its significance lies in the way the project treats the watch case as an artistic form rather than simply a housing for the movement, placing contemporary art and high watchmaking in direct conversation.
The design draws on Koons’ Balloon Dog series, which began in the mid-1990s and transforms a familiar inflatable object into a permanent, highly finished sculpture. Hublot applies a similar idea to the Classic Fusion, reshaping its traditionally slim architecture with rounded surfaces, convex lines and inflated-looking volumes. The result places the visual language of contemporary sculpture at the centre of a luxury-watch proposition.
Many of the watch’s components have been redesigned to sustain the balloon effect, including the sapphire crystal, titanium screw heads, domed dial construction and sculptural case. Additional details include a rubber-covered aluminium crown, a flexible decorative element at 10:30, a Balloon Dog-shaped seconds-hand counterweight and voluminous Super-LumiNova-coated indices and hands. The watch is powered by an in-house automatic movement with a specially developed tungsten rotor whose rounded form echoes the case.
Hublot says the case architecture required extensive technical development, with components reworked and refined using five-axis CNC machining before being finished by hand. The watches are designed, developed and assembled at the company’s manufacture in Nyon, while the accompanying packaging continues the Balloon Dog theme through a chrome-finished sculpture matched to each watch variant. A five-plus-five guarantee programme can extend coverage for Hublot watches to as much as ten years.
The limited Classic Fusion Balloon Dog is available through selected Hublot points of sale and hublot.com, and is also being presented in a number of galleries. For Hublot, the project extends its long-running fusion of materials, engineering and visual culture into a format where the sculptural object is not merely referenced but built into the watch’s proportions, surfaces and operating details.
