Bel Brands USA has altered its century-old cheese mascot across selected packs, turning a simple packaging change into a mystery-led consumer campaign.
Bel Brands USA has given The Laughing Cow a noticeably serious expression, replacing the familiar smile with The Not Laughing Cow on select packages of Creamy Original cheese wedges nationwide. The change marks the first time in more than 100 years that the brand icon has stopped laughing, creating an attention-grabbing break from one of the product’s most recognisable visual cues. Rather than explain the shift immediately, the company is inviting consumers to speculate about what caused it.
The move builds on The Laughing Cow’s long-standing association with optimism and positivity. Since 1921, the brand has appeared on grocery shelves, in lunchboxes and in refrigerators around the world, with its cheerful character serving as a reminder not to take life too seriously. The sudden change therefore works as a tightly focused piece of brand storytelling, using a familiar asset rather than introducing a new food format.
The Not Laughing Cow appears on selected packs of The Laughing Cow Creamy Original cheese wedges, while the serious character has also been seen in diners, parks and across the brand’s social channels and website. Bel Brands USA has directed audiences to TheNotLaughingCow.com, where the story is being extended through speculation and further updates. The company has not yet provided an explanation for the character’s altered mood.
Jamee Pearlstein, chief marketing officer of Bel Brands, US Cheese, said the unexplained change was intended to prompt attention because The Laughing Cow had spent more than a century reminding people not to take life too seriously. Her comments position the packaging alteration as a conversation starter, with the unanswered question supplying the campaign’s central mechanism. The approach gives a mature grocery brand a way to create activity around an existing product without changing its core offer.
The campaign places packaging, digital channels and an unfolding narrative around the same consumer touchpoint: the familiar cheese wedge. The Laughing Cow remains part of Bel US, whose portfolio also includes Babybel, GoGo squeeZ and Boursin, but this particular exercise is concentrated on the brand’s mascot and the curiosity generated by its departure from the norm. Its eventual explanation will determine whether the serious expression becomes a short-lived device or a broader piece of brand memory.
