The Gatlinburg mountaintop park has added an immersive lighting experience to its redesigned Treetop Skywalk, translating a seasonal natural phenomenon into permanent entertainment.
Anakeesta reported on June 17, 2026, that it had opened the Firefly Experience, an immersive attraction forming the centrepiece of its updated Treetop Skywalk in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Inspired by synchronous fireflies found in the Great Smoky Mountains, the installation uses lighting design, storytelling and technology to evoke the insects’ coordinated displays. The year-round experience represents the latest addition to the park’s Making More Magic campaign and connects a regional natural spectacle with a permanent visitor attraction.
The attraction takes its cue from a phenomenon that occurs during summer in the Smokies, when thousands of fireflies flash together and create waves of light across the forest floor. According to the release, scientists believe the synchronisation is influenced by biological rhythms and environmental cues, enabling the insects to communicate through collective pulses. That behaviour provides both the visual reference and the scientific framework for the park’s interpretation.
Lighting sequences have been woven through the elevated pathways of the Treetop Skywalk, where they synchronise, flash and fade in patterns modelled on the natural display. The release said the choreographed illumination is intended to make visitors feel as though they are moving through a living forest at twilight. The wider Skywalk redesign also introduced new towers, expanded bridges and winding canopy pathways, creating additional routes and vantage points above the forest floor.
The project places environmental storytelling inside an established adventure-park format rather than treating the firefly display as a conventional light show. By combining an elevated forest setting with sequences informed by firefly communication, the experience links its technology to the landscape surrounding the attraction. Karen Bentz, Anakeesta’s founding partner, described the installation as a celebration of the natural beauty and wonder associated with the Smokies.
The Firefly Experience joins several enhancements introduced through the Making More Magic campaign and was described by the company as the principal feature of the redesigned Skywalk. Anakeesta’s wider mountaintop offer includes AnaVista Tower, Vista Gardens, two mountain coasters, ziplining, BirdVenture, gem mining and the Astra Lumina night-time experience, alongside dining and shopping. The new installation gives the park another way to build its entertainment around its Great Smoky Mountains setting while extending the theme of a short-lived seasonal event across the year.
