Virtual Hangar® recorded a 42% increase in private jet requests from the New York metropolitan area to Florida during the 36 hours following Zohran Mamdani’s New York City mayoral victory. The company said the requests were for flights within the following seven days, indicating an immediate response among high-net-worth travellers. The pattern matters because it links private aviation demand with broader concerns about taxation, regulation and the cost of remaining in New York.
The strongest demand was concentrated in South Florida. Virtual Hangar said 38% of new requests were bound for Palm Beach, while a further 40% were headed to Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale or Miami. Palm Beach has also remained the top destination among UberJets®, the company’s elite membership tier, for three consecutive years.
Virtual Hangar’s data places the booking activity within a wider set of pressures facing affluent New Yorkers. The company attributed the movement to concerns over proposed rent-control expansion, higher income taxes and increased regulatory spending under Mamdani’s progressive platform. It also pointed to long security queues linked to the federal government shutdown as a factor encouraging travellers to consider private aviation.
The figures illustrate how a private-aircraft booking platform can function as an indicator of short-term sentiment among wealthy travellers, although the data records requests rather than completed relocations. Chief Technology Officer Paul M. Svensen described the increase as a behavioural shift among high-net-worth individuals seeking to move quickly, while also positioning the company’s flight trends as a signal of where wealth may be moving next.
