The Penetron Group supplied its concrete waterproofing system for the Retal Rise and Nobu Hotel Towers in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia, a development completed in 2025 on the Khobar Corniche. The system was specified for the raft foundations beneath both towers and for retaining walls, with the stated aim of providing long-term durability and watertight protection. The project illustrates how structural waterproofing is being integrated into luxury residential and hospitality construction in coastal settings.
Located in Al-Khobar’s Al Nakheel district beside the Corniche, the development comprises two towers. One is a 25-storey residential building with 129 luxury apartments, while the second is a 16-storey tower containing the Nobu Hotel, 101 rooms, 62 Nobu Residences apartments, the Nobu Restaurant and a café. The release presents the waterproofing work as part of the underlying construction strategy rather than as a visible feature of the completed buildings.
The specified system combined several products for different parts of the structures. PENETRON ADMIX, described in the release as a crystalline waterproofing admixture with tracer, was added at 1 percent of cement content and used to treat 8,000 cubic metres of concrete. PENEBAR SW-45 swellable waterstops were installed at construction and cold joints, while PENETRON was applied to selected retaining-wall surfaces. PENECRETE MORTAR was used to repair small cracks, voids, honeycombing, tie-rod holes and other penetrations in the raft foundation and retaining walls.
The layered approach reflects the distinct leakage risks found in below-ground concrete structures. The admixture was incorporated into the concrete, waterstops addressed jointed areas, the topical material was used on selected wall surfaces, and the mortar supported local repairs. The Penetron Group said the design was intended to provide additional protection against hydrostatic pressure and aggressive groundwater conditions, while Sam Annous, managing director of Penetron Saudi Arabia, attributed customer satisfaction to local support, rapid follow-up and the system’s reported performance.
