Artificial intelligence in healthcare is often discussed in terms of diagnostics and clinical decision-making, but some of its largest deployments are happening in less visible parts of the patient experience. Parlance says its conversational voice AI has now answered more than 1.9 billion patient calls, handling at least six calls every second across more than 400 health systems in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
The scale matters because the telephone remains an important access point for patients trying to navigate healthcare systems. Parlance’s AI agents handle routine interactions including appointment scheduling, prescription refill requests, frequently asked questions and call routing, while also populating information for human agents. The company reports an 87% caller engagement rate across its deployments.
Automating these interactions is partly an attempt to address a familiar operational problem: skilled contact center employees can spend significant portions of their time answering repetitive questions or redirecting callers. Parlance reports that health systems typically experience a reduction of more than 33% in live-agent call volume on the first day of deployment, although the release does not provide independent data for assessing how consistently that figure applies across different organizations.
The milestone also illustrates a practical dimension of the current AI transition. Unlike emerging generative AI applications that organizations may still be testing, conversational systems are already being used at substantial scale for narrowly defined administrative tasks where availability and accurate routing can directly shape the patient experience. Parlance says its technology operates around the clock without traditional phone menus or hold times, escalating interactions when human involvement is required.
For healthcare providers, the significance of voice AI will ultimately depend on more than the number of calls automated. Systems handling patient access must also work reliably across different callers and integrate effectively with existing healthcare operations while preserving appropriate human support. Parlance’s approach, developed over more than three decades and now operating across thousands of hospitals and clinics, offers one example of how AI is moving from experimental technology into the everyday infrastructure patients encounter before they ever reach a clinician.
