OBXmas brings together seasonal events across North Carolina’s Outer Banks, giving the destination a coordinated way to promote travel beyond the summer peak.
The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau is presenting OBXmas as a destination-wide holiday programme spanning festive events across the Outer Banks. The schedule brings together celebrations in Manteo, Hatteras Island, Duck and Kill Devil Hills, alongside activities at local cultural and historic attractions. The coordinated approach gives the region a single seasonal framework for engaging both visitors and residents during the quieter part of the year.
The programme reflects the Outer Banks’ effort to broaden its appeal beyond its traditional summer setting. Lee Nettles, executive director of the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, points to the area’s central East Coast location as a reason families meet there, while also highlighting accommodation deals, uncrowded restaurants, beaches suited to shelling and clear night skies as features of the non-summer season.
Among the listed events are Manteo’s Christmas Tree Lighting and Parade, Island Jingle at Roanoke Island Festival Park, the Holiday Flotilla Parade and WinterLights at the Elizabethan Gardens. Hatteras Island contributes a Village Christmas Parade, the Holiday Trail of Lights and the Shuck Hatteras Oyster Festival, while Duck’s Yuletide Celebration and Kill Devil Hills’ Holiday Hustle 5K and Elf Dash extend the programme across additional communities.
The calendar also links holiday activity with local commerce and heritage. Outer Banks-wide holiday markets are positioned as opportunities to shop from local artisans, while the Misfit Bars of Christmas and 12 Bars of Christmas give restaurants and bars a seasonal platform through menus, decorations and events. Christmas Past at Island Farm and a Twelfth Night activity day at Roanoke Island Festival Park add historical and family-oriented programming to the offer.
OBXmas further includes a fee-free day at Wright Brothers National Memorial on December 17, marking the 122nd anniversary of the first flight, followed by a kid-friendly New Year’s Eve fireworks display on the Manteo waterfront. By combining attractions, hospitality, retail and community events, the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau is treating the holiday period as a connected destination experience rather than a series of isolated gatherings.
