Goodwill Industries of Eastern North Carolina has opened a 7,600-square-foot market in Aurora, linking food access with education, employment and community support.
Goodwill Industries of Eastern North Carolina, Inc. (GIENC®), also known as Goodwill Industries of Eastern North Carolina (GIENC®), has opened the Goodwill Community Cupboard in Aurora, North Carolina. The 7,600-square-foot market at 150 South 5th Street is located within the Brantley Tillman Opportunity Center and opened its doors on Thursday, September 10. The project places a community food market inside an area identified as lacking convenient access to fresh and healthful groceries.
The Cupboard is part of GIENC’s Goodwill Feeds initiative and is intended to provide healthful food at reasonable prices. Its range includes fresh fruits and vegetables, proteins, non-perishable foods and other staples. GIENC says Aurora and Richland Township qualify as food deserts under the United States Department of Agriculture’s criteria, which consider distance from supermarkets alongside population thresholds, with longer distances applied in rural areas.
The market also extends beyond food retail. GIENC says a community room within the site will support STEAM-related activities and encourage local engagement, while the organisation’s wider work in Beaufort County includes workforce development programmes, food distributions and grants to local non-profit organisations. The Brantley Tillman Opportunity Center honours Brantley Tillman, who has served GIENC for more than 40 years, including two decades on its board.
GIENC presents the Cupboard as a way to connect three strands of its mission: education, employment and life enrichment. President and chief executive Christopher Hash said access to food, education and employment opportunities is central to community wellness, while the organisation links dependable food access with learning, workplace reliability and independent living. That positioning makes the market a broader social-infrastructure project rather than a standalone grocery outlet.
The Aurora location is one part of GIENC’s wider Goodwill Feeds activity. Earlier this year, the organisation partnered with TABLE to expand the Chefs@Home food-kit programme for school-age children experiencing food insecurity in Orange County and their families. GIENC serves 51 counties and operates 43 employment programme centres, giving the Cupboard a local role within a wider network of employment, education and community initiatives.
