Visit Philadelphia has announced more than 65 library host locations for TED Democracy LIVE, a free livestream initiative that will extend TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures beyond Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. The programme is supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts and being delivered in collaboration with the American Library Association. The announcement positions the event not only as a Philadelphia gathering, but also as a distributed civic and cultural programme reaching audiences across the United States.
TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures is scheduled for June 13, 2026, and will bring local, national and global thought leaders together for original talks examining the past, present and future of democracy. According to Visit Philadelphia, the event will also include live performances, interactive activations and opportunities for connection. Its timing coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States, giving the programme a specific historical frame while keeping the focus on democratic values and civic engagement.
The marquee event is expected to feature more than 15 new TED Talks, with audiences invited to consider the principles that shaped the nation and how they might evolve over the next 250 years. More than 65 libraries will host satellite events, allowing communities to engage with the conversations taking place in Philadelphia through local venues rather than travelling to the city. The participating libraries were selected through a national application process coordinated with the American Library Association, with the selection process emphasising regional outreach and alignment with existing programming.
The initiative spans 42 states and territories, according to the announcement, and includes libraries in settings ranging from small towns to major cities. That footprint gives the programme a practical distribution model: a major live event remains centred at the Kimmel Center, while libraries provide local settings for viewing and discussion. The Pew Charitable Trusts said libraries could help communities explore the country’s history, encounter differing perspectives and connect with others, while Visit Philadelphia described the livestream as an extension of Philadelphia’s role in national conversations.
