The active-travel operator is adding Michigan and further Canary Islands itineraries as it broadens its 2027 offer across families, adults and specialist groups.
Backroads is expanding its 2027 active-travel portfolio with its first trips in Michigan, new itineraries in Spain’s Canary Islands and additional programmes for families, women and travellers seeking easier-paced holidays. Announced on June 25, 2026, the range spans Biking, Hiking & Walking and Multi-Adventure trips for adults and families. The move gives the operator a broader set of domestic and international options while extending several existing travel formats into new destinations.
The Michigan launch centres on the Great Lakes and Mackinac Island, with one Biking Tour for adults and a separate Multi-Adventure Trip designed for families. Backroads said the itineraries will cover Northern Michigan’s lakeside towns, Traverse City’s vineyards and cherry orchards, and Mackinac Island, where motorised vehicles are prohibited. The company described car-free biking, family hiking and the region’s summer landscape as central features of the new offer.
The operator is also adding two Canary Islands trips for 2027: a family Multi-Adventure itinerary and an adult Biking itinerary. They follow an existing Canary Islands Multi-Adventure Tour for couples, friends and solo travellers, which Backroads said began filling spaces quickly after its announcement the previous year. The new trips are positioned around the destination’s volcanic landscape, beaches and cuisine; the family itinerary includes internal air and a commercial ferry crossing, while the adult trip lists internal air as part of its pricing.
Backroads’ wider release places the destination launches alongside Dolce Tempo easygoing tours and Women’s Adventures in the United States, Europe and South America. It also identifies further family additions, including a Cape Cod Multi-Adventure Tour for families with kids and teens and a Black Hills & Badlands Multi-Adventure Tour for families with teens and people in their 20s. The company reported that 2027 family bookings were already more than 12 per cent higher than in 2026, attributing the figure to its own booking data.
Taken together, the announcement shows Backroads extending its established trip structure rather than relying on a single destination launch. Michigan adds a new US setting for both adult and family travel, while the Canary Islands expansion gives an existing international programme more audience-specific formats. The 2027 lineup therefore links geographic expansion with segmentation by activity, pace, age group and travelling format, keeping the company’s active-travel proposition varied without moving beyond the categories outlined in the release.
