Two new weather-resistant sensors extend monitoring to garages, gates and outdoor structures, reflecting a broader approach to securing the overlooked edges of residential properties.
Abode Systems is expanding its smart home security system beyond conventional indoor entry points with two sensors designed specifically for garages, gates and other exposed areas. The Garage Tilt Sensor and Outdoor Contact Sensor address parts of residential properties that can be difficult to monitor with standard indoor equipment, suggesting a shift toward treating the entire property perimeter as part of a connected security system.
The Garage Tilt Sensor detects when a surface moves more than 45 degrees from its resting position, allowing it to monitor garage doors, attic hatches, basement tilt windows and similar hinged structures. When movement occurs, homeowners can receive an alert through the Abode app. The wireless sensor is also designed for up to 10 years of battery life under standard use and includes a tamper switch to detect interference.
Abode’s Outdoor Contact Sensor takes a different approach, using a stronger magnet and wider activation gap for locations such as metal gates, sheds, detached garages, storage units and mailboxes. Its IP66-rated enclosure is designed to withstand dust and heavy rain, while dual tamper switches provide additional monitoring for a device likely to remain exposed. Both sensors require an Abode hub and can communicate at distances of up to 500 feet under optimal conditions.
The more consequential feature may be how these devices interact with Abode’s CUE automation system. A gate opening after dark, for example, can trigger driveway lighting, while an unattended garage door can be programmed to close after a specified period. That turns the sensors from simple alarm triggers into inputs for household automation, connecting security monitoring with everyday property management.
The launch illustrates how smart home security is gradually expanding from protecting obvious entrances toward monitoring less visible parts of a property. With the Garage Tilt Sensor priced at $34.99 and the Outdoor Contact Sensor at $49.99, Abode is adding relatively specialized hardware to an existing connected-home platform rather than introducing a separate security category. For homeowners already using the company’s system, the devices offer a way to extend monitoring into spaces that conventional door and window sensors were not designed to handle.
