The TRUE BLUE 520 pairs traditional analog preamp engineering with a capacitive interface, reflecting how professional audio hardware is evolving without abandoning familiar workflows.
Cloud Microphones has begun shipping the TRUE BLUE 520, its new 500 Series microphone preamp developed with TRUE Systems founder and designer Tim Spencer. While the $899 unit enters a crowded market for professional recording hardware, its more notable proposition is the combination of established analog circuit principles with a touch-based control system intended to replace conventional mechanical switches.
The preamp uses internal relay switching designed to shorten the circuit path and limit high-frequency phase shifts, with the aim of maintaining a transparent signal path. It offers 76 dB of gain and 28 dBu of internal headroom, specifications intended to accommodate a range of recording situations, from sensitive microphones to higher-level sources. The design draws partly on experience from TRUE Systems’ Precision 8 preamp while introducing a different approach to physical interaction.
That approach centers on Cloud Touch, a patent-pending capacitive interface that allows functions such as gain adjustment, phantom power and high-pass filtering to be controlled through an illuminated front panel. Removing traditional push-button switches is intended to make operation quieter while improving visibility in dark studios and live performance environments. A two-second Blink-Delay mechanism adds protection by requiring certain functions to be deliberately held before they are activated.
The TRUE BLUE 520 also addresses the particular requirements of ribbon and dynamic microphones. In ribbon/dynamic mode, phantom power components and input capacitors are automatically removed from the signal path, reducing the possibility of accidentally applying +48V power to sensitive equipment. Instrument DI IN and THRU connections provide additional routing flexibility, while a continuously variable high-pass filter operating between 25 Hz and 420 Hz gives engineers finer control over unwanted low-frequency content.
For Cloud Microphones, which is best known for ribbon microphones and its Cloudlifter mic activators, the TRUE BLUE 520 represents an expansion into another part of the professional recording signal chain. More broadly, its design illustrates an ongoing balancing act in studio hardware: incorporating newer control interfaces and safeguards while retaining the analog architecture, tactile accessibility and specialized signal management that recording engineers continue to rely on.
