Wind Creek Chicago Southland has been awarded LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, linking the East Hazel Crest property to a recognised framework for environmentally responsible construction. The certification acknowledges efficient design and the use of low-emitting construction materials intended to minimise ecological impact. For Wind Creek Chicago Southland, the award presents sustainability as part of the property’s operating and development model rather than as a separate initiative.
LEED, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is described in the release as a widely used green-building rating system and an international symbol of excellence. The property broke ground in 2022 and opened in 2024, placing the certification within the early operating history of a casino and entertainment destination in the Chicago Southland area. Wind Creek Hospitality, an authority of the Poarch Creek Indians, manages the property alongside gaming facilities and racetracks in several locations.
The release said sustainability considerations began with the selection of a high-priority site that redeveloped previously used land, helping limit environmental disruption and preserve natural areas. The project also includes water metering, green power and carbon-offset programmes, while heat-island reduction strategies are intended to help prevent localised temperature increases. Low-emitting materials, enhanced acoustic performance and indoor-air-quality strategies were also cited as features supporting the comfort and wellbeing of guests and team members.
The certification gives the property a formal measure for a range of design and operational choices, from resource use to indoor conditions. USGBC President and CEO Peter Templeton said certified buildings can lower carbon emissions, reduce operating costs and conserve resources while prioritising sustainable practices and human health. Those points are presented as broader benefits of LEED certification, rather than as independently reported performance results for Wind Creek Chicago Southland.
Brent Pinkston, executive vice-president and chief operating officer at Wind Creek Hospitality, said the company’s long-term perspective includes strengthening the communities it serves. The award therefore connects the property’s physical construction with the operator’s stated approach to investment in the Southland. With the certification now attached to the site, Wind Creek Chicago Southland has a defined sustainability credential that can shape how its development is understood by guests, team members and the surrounding community.
