Middle West Spirits has unveiled Old Elk’s first major releases since its acquisition, highlighting how long-aged American whiskey remains a defining marker of craftsmanship and strategic investment.
Middle West Spirits has introduced the Old Elk Distillery 10-Year-Old Collection, marking the first significant product launch since acquiring the Colorado whiskey brand in 2025. The collection includes a Straight Bourbon, Straight Wheat Whiskey, and Wheated Bourbon, each aged for a decade before release. More than an expansion of the company’s portfolio, the launch reflects the long-term planning required in American whiskey production, where decisions made years earlier ultimately shape what reaches consumers today.
Age-stated whiskey continues to occupy a distinctive place in the premium spirits market, where producers increasingly balance consumer demand for mature expressions with the realities of limited inventories. Unlike many food and beverage categories, whiskey cannot be produced quickly in response to rising interest, making well-aged releases both a commercial and operational commitment. As independent distilleries grow through acquisitions and portfolio expansion, carefully matured products often become an opportunity to establish continuity while introducing a new direction.
The new collection showcases three different grain profiles, each intended to demonstrate how mash bills and extended barrel aging influence flavour and character. The Straight Bourbon features an unusually high proportion of malted barley, while the Straight Wheat Whiskey relies predominantly on soft red winter wheat. The Wheated Bourbon, meanwhile, emphasises wheat alongside corn, illustrating Old Elk’s long-standing focus on grain-forward whiskey styles. Each expression is bottled at just over 50 percent alcohol by volume and will be offered nationwide at a suggested retail price of $69.99.
For Middle West Spirits, the release also represents an early milestone following the integration of Old Elk into its broader business. The acquisition expanded the Ohio-based distiller’s reach while adding an established whiskey brand to its portfolio, and the 10-year collection signals an intention to preserve Old Elk’s identity while benefiting from greater production scale and distribution. It demonstrates how acquisitions in the craft spirits industry increasingly focus on strengthening established brands rather than replacing them.
The debut of the 10-Year-Old Collection underscores the enduring importance of patience in whiskey making. While trends in the spirits industry continue to evolve, mature, age-stated expressions remain closely associated with authenticity and careful production. For consumers, these releases offer another reminder that some of the most significant developments in American whiskey begin long before a bottle ever reaches the shelf.
