The Naval Postgraduate School’s new NVIDIA DGX GB300 deployment highlights how power, liquid cooling and facility upgrades are becoming as important as computing hardware in scaling AI.
Vertiv has deployed the power, liquid cooling, racks and supporting infrastructure needed to operate a new NVIDIA DGX GB300 system at the Naval Postgraduate School. The installation gives NPS a locally operated environment for AI research, education, digital engineering, modeling and simulation, while also illustrating a practical challenge facing organizations adopting advanced AI: the computing hardware is only one part of the deployment.
High-density accelerated computing places substantially different demands on facilities than conventional IT equipment. Greater power requirements and heat generation can require changes to electrical distribution, cooling, fluid management and monitoring, along with specialized installation and commissioning. In the NPS project, NVIDIA supplied the DGX GB300 system while Vertiv handled the physical environment required to bring that system into operation.
The three-rack deployment uses Vertiv’s SmartIT infrastructure, combining power protection and distribution, racks, liquid-cooling technology, fluid monitoring and interfaces with the existing facility. This coordinated approach is particularly relevant for organizations that want advanced AI capacity but do not have the time or resources to construct entirely new data centers designed around high-density computing.
For universities, government organizations and businesses, adapting existing facilities could become an increasingly important part of AI adoption. Vertiv is positioning its pre-integrated architecture as a repeatable model that can begin with a relatively contained deployment and later expand into larger configurations. The NPS installation provides a concrete example of that approach, although the release does not disclose the project’s cost, energy consumption or the extent of modifications required at the facility.
The project underscores an often less visible dimension of the AI infrastructure boom. Discussions about advanced AI tend to center on processors, models and software, but putting powerful computing systems into practical use also depends on electricity, cooling and carefully engineered physical environments. As rack densities increase, those requirements could shape where and how organizations are able to deploy AI systems. The NPS installation demonstrates that existing facilities can be adapted for newer computing architectures, while also showing why infrastructure planning is becoming inseparable from decisions about AI capacity itself.
