Aeromexico intends to deploy Honeywell Aerospace’s SURF-A software across more than 100 Boeing 737 aircraft, expanding the role of cockpit runway alerts.
Honeywell Aerospace said on July 20, 2026 that Aeromexico intends to adopt its Surface Alerts, or SURF-A, technology across the airline’s entire Boeing 737 NG and 737 MAX fleet of more than 100 aircraft. The software is designed to provide pilots with real-time aural and visual warnings when an aircraft is on a trajectory to collide with another aircraft on a runway. The announcement places runway-collision awareness alongside the broader avionics systems airlines are using to support flight crews during taxi, take-off and landing.
SURF-A uses GPS data, automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast equipment and software analytics to identify the location of traffic hazards. Honeywell Aerospace said the system can provide warnings at approximately 30 and 15 seconds before a potential impact, while a cockpit display shows a “Traffic on runway” alert alongside the aural warning. The company said the technology is intended to give pilots additional time to recognise hazards and take corrective action, while Aeromexico described the system as a potential additional aid to situational awareness.
The planned deployment is structured as a software upgrade rather than a new aircraft installation. Honeywell Aerospace said SURF-A is available for the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System and Traffic Collision Avoidance System already aboard Aeromexico’s 737 fleet. FAA certification on several Boeing aircraft is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and continue into 2027, according to the announcement. Aeromexico also intends to become the launch customer for the technology, subject to the stated certification process.
The agreement adds a newer alerting layer to Honeywell Aerospace’s existing runway-safety portfolio, which includes the Runway Awareness and Advisory System and SmartRunway and SmartLanding software. Honeywell said those products are installed on more than 6,000 commercial aircraft globally, representing roughly one quarter of the world’s fleet. In a separate company announcement, Honeywell said Southwest Airlines had installed SmartRunway and SmartLanding across its fleet of more than 700 aircraft in 2025.
For Honeywell Aerospace, Aeromexico’s intended adoption illustrates how runway safety can be extended through software that works with equipment already present on an airline’s aircraft. The company’s announcement does not provide financial terms or a confirmed completion date for the deployment, and certification remains a stated next step. If the process proceeds as described, Aeromexico would give SURF-A a significant operating environment across its 737 fleet while Honeywell continues building its runway-awareness offering around cockpit alerts.
