The Austin exhibition turns Renaissance masterpieces into a large-scale cultural attraction, extending the city’s positioning as an international destination for arts and experiential storytelling.
The Sistine Chapel Experience is bringing a full-scale digital recreation of Michelangelo’s frescoes to Austin, creating a 25,000-square-foot attraction at Barton Creek Square Mall. Visitors will encounter The Creation of Adam, The Last Judgment and 16 biblical scenes, alongside works associated with Botticelli, Perugino, Ghirlandaio, Pinturicchio, Rosselli and Signorelli. The project matters beyond its artistic subject because it places a major international cultural experience within Austin’s expanding visitor economy.
The exhibition is a collaboration between the Vatican Museums, Scripta Maneant and Sistine Chapel Exhibits, LLC, a group of Texas-based founders working with Italian art publishers. Its format is designed to make the paintings more physically immediate than a conventional museum presentation, using projection and moving light to bring viewers close to details that are difficult to see in the original chapel. The experience therefore combines heritage interpretation with an entertainment-oriented approach to cultural attendance.
More than 50 laser projectors power the production, which the organisers value at more than $5 million. The imagery draws on more than four million photographs and 270,000 ultra-high-definition reproductions, created through 65 days of photographic work. The visitor journey passes through three galleries, including a cinematic prelude produced by Gary Lucchesi and James Younger, before reaching the immersive recreation of the chapel.
The Austin presentation also includes a reproduction of a Gutenberg Bible and a full-scale replica of Michelangelo’s Pietà, extending the attraction beyond the ceiling and wall paintings. The site is fully ADA compliant and welcomes visitors of all ages, with visits expected to last between 45 and 90 minutes. Its placement at a former retail centre reflects how cultural operators are using adaptable commercial spaces to create destination experiences outside traditional galleries.
The attraction is scheduled to open on November 19, 2025, at Barton Creek Square Mall, with visiting hours listed from Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and last entry at 7 p.m. The Sistine Chapel Experience presents the format as a meeting point between cultural preservation, digital technology and tourism, while Austin’s existing calendar of international events provides the wider setting. Its longer-term significance will depend on whether this kind of immersive presentation can convert global art recognition into repeat local visitation.
