The Japanese materials developer has made a plant-based gel nail polish without TPO, HEMA or TMPTA, linking cosmetics innovation with its wider biomass strategy.
Green Science Alliance Co., Ltd. has developed a plant- and biomass-derived gel nail polish formulated without TPO, HEMA and TMPTA. The product is intended for LED or ultraviolet curing and is scheduled to become available through the company’s e-commerce website from September 17. The development extends the Japanese company’s work on replacing petroleum-based materials with alternatives derived from plants and biomass.
The product arrives in a cosmetics category where formulation and ingredient concerns are closely tied to consumer safety. TPO, or diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide, is used as a photopolymerisation initiator in gel nails, while HEMA is a resin ingredient that can cause irritation or allergic reactions when uncured material contacts skin. The company also says the new polish excludes TMPTA, another resin component used in gel products.
Green Science Alliance says the current plant and biomass content ranges from 22% to 25%, with further increases planned. It describes the polish as vegan and says the absence of TPO and HEMA can reduce the risk of allergies, while avoiding an unqualified safety claim for every user. The product is presented alongside plant-based biodegradable fake nails, with the company’s Bio-Sakura Shop serving as its e-commerce channel.
The nail polish reflects a broader materials approach that Green Science Alliance has applied to biodegradable resins, plastics, coatings, paints, adhesives, plasticisers, lubricants, nanocellulose and other products. That programme was also examined in a tutorial review by company chief executive Ryohei Mori, published in RSC Sustainability, on replacing petroleum-based chemical products with natural biomass-based alternatives. The cosmetics application therefore gives the strategy a direct consumer-product form.
For the beauty sector, the development illustrates how ingredient scrutiny and lower-petroleum formulation can converge in a familiar product format rather than remain confined to industrial materials. Green Science Alliance says it intends to accelerate the rollout of the gel polish in domestic and international markets, while the stated biomass share leaves room for further formulation changes. Its next challenge is turning a technically differentiated material into an accessible, repeat-use beauty product.
