The debut of EXPLORA III reflects the cruise brand’s continued investment in larger ships, sustainable technologies, and experiences that blend contemporary luxury with longer-term environmental ambitions.
Explora Journeys has officially named EXPLORA III in Barcelona, marking the arrival of the newest vessel in its growing luxury fleet and an important milestone in the company’s plan to build six ships. The ceremony follows the ship’s early delivery in Genoa and an inaugural Mediterranean voyage before its formal christening in Spain. As the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ship in the fleet, EXPLORA III also represents the brand’s latest step toward incorporating newer marine technologies into its operations.
While the naming ceremony celebrated maritime tradition, the ship itself reflects a broader evolution in how luxury cruise operators are competing for travelers. Measuring more than 19 meters longer than its sister ships, EXPLORA III dedicates the additional space to expanded public areas, larger wellness facilities, redesigned social spaces, and more private accommodations. Among its additions are a second Owner’s Residence designed by architect Patricia Urquiola, new culinary venues, enhanced retail experiences, and a reimagined wellness center that combines fitness, spa, and relaxation facilities into a single destination.
The ship also highlights the industry’s increasing focus on environmental performance alongside guest experience. Operating on LNG, EXPLORA III is designed with the flexibility to adopt renewable alternatives such as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG as those fuels become more widely available. It is also equipped with shore power capability, allowing the vessel to connect to local electrical grids in compatible ports and reduce emissions while docked. These features reflect wider efforts across the cruise sector to modernize fleets in response to changing environmental expectations and emerging regulations.
Following its official debut, EXPLORA III will begin a maiden voyage to Lisbon before embarking on itineraries through Northern Europe, Iceland, Greenland, and North America. The launch comes at the midpoint of Explora Journeys’ six-ship expansion strategy, with additional vessels already scheduled to enter service over the next two years. As competition intensifies in the premium cruise market, the introduction of larger, more technologically advanced ships suggests that future growth will depend not only on reaching new destinations but also on redefining the onboard experience through thoughtful design, greater personal space, and continued investment in next-generation maritime technology.
