The family bakery’s Simply Sourdough line uses natural fermentation in full-size pitas, pre-sliced minis and pita bites.
Toufayan Bakeries has introduced Simply Sourdough, a range of hearth-baked pitas made with natural sourdough fermentation. The launch brings a technique the family bakery traces to its founding in 1926 to three formats aimed at different ways of serving pita.
The Hearth Baked Pita comes in a four-pack and keeps the pocket for fillings such as vegetables and proteins. Mini Pita comes pre-sliced in a six-pack, while Pita Bites offers 20 slices for dipping or sharing. The formats give shoppers a choice between filling a whole pita and serving smaller pieces alongside a spread.
The bakery says its original starter method begins with flour and water. It describes the resulting pita as soft and says the range is made without preservatives. The line is also non-GMO, vegan and certified kosher pareve.
Toufayan says Simply Sourdough is rolling out at major US retailers. For a bakery that already makes pita, wraps and other flatbreads, the range gives shoppers a way to try sourdough in a bread they can fill, dip or share.
