The limited-edition chocolate MoonPie box marks the release of the biopic Jimmy, with a portion of sales proceeds going to the USO.
MoonPie has released a limited-edition box of 12 classic chocolate MoonPies alongside Jimmy, a biographical drama about actor and World War II veteran Jimmy Stewart. The box takes its name from the scene in It’s a Wonderful Life in which Stewart’s character offers to lasso the moon.
The snack also appears in Jimmy. Director Aaron Burns uses wartime MoonPie packaging as a period detail in the film, which stars KJ Apa and follows Stewart from Hollywood through his military service and return to acting. The commemorative box brings that connection into the grocery aisle through a reference to one of Stewart’s best-known roles.
The military link extends beyond the film. Chattanooga Bakery, which has made MoonPies since 1917, says it has shipped the snacks to service members overseas since World War II. The bakery continues to work with the USO, Friends of the Troops and Veterans of Foreign Wars to distribute MoonPies to service members and veterans.
A portion of sales proceeds from the commemorative boxes will go to the USO. MoonPie lists the boxes online at lassothemoonpie.com and at Food City, Ingles and select US grocers while supplies last.
