The nonprofit’s Before You Pack, Give Back campaign links trip-emissions contributions with clean-cookstove funding, reflecting a more purposeful approach to travel upgrades.
Cool Effect, a Bay Area nonprofit, is inviting travellers to make an “impact upgrade” rather than a seat upgrade through its Before You Pack, Give Back campaign. The initiative encourages people to calculate and offset the emissions associated with flights, road travel, hotel stays and cruises while helping fund clean cookstoves for families in Honduras and Guatemala through Proyecto Mirador. The campaign connects the spending and attention surrounding Travel Tuesday with the charitable focus of Giving Tuesday, positioning emissions contributions as part of trip planning rather than an afterthought.
The proposition is supported by a national survey conducted by Atomik Research among 1,005 US adults planning to travel in the next year. Cool Effect says 61% of respondents were familiar with carbon offsetting, while 74% would take steps to offset travel emissions if the process were simple and clearly explained. The research also found that 77% would support a climate project costing less than an in-flight drink, and that 71% placed feeling good about their travel impact ahead of spending on seat upgrades.
Cool Effect’s travel-offset calculator allows users to estimate emissions across several parts of a journey and then contribute to projects intended to compensate for them. The company says its programme can cover airfare, driving, accommodation and cruises, with the contribution calculated according to the relevant travel activity. The campaign directs donations towards Proyecto Mirador’s clean-cookstove installations in rural Central America, where open-fire cooking is replaced with cleaner equipment.
The model gives a charitable dimension to a transaction that is often treated as a technical exercise. Cool Effect says more than 90% of donations go directly to project partners, while its wider mission is to help businesses and individuals take measurable action against climate change through scientifically verified carbon credits. The campaign therefore combines a practical calculator with a visible social benefit, making the destination experience part of the contribution narrative.
For Cool Effect, the campaign places travel offsetting within the broader language of generosity and personal choice. Its survey findings suggest that simplicity, low cost and a clear connection to communities could influence whether travellers act on their environmental concerns. By tying the calculation to clean-cookstove installations rather than presenting offsetting as an abstract payment, Before You Pack, Give Back offers the organisation a focused way to frame climate action before a journey begins.
