Garmin’s acquisition of TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic brings established endurance and strength coaching platforms into its fitness ecosystem, deepening its role in athlete training.
Garmin has acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic, bringing two established digital training platforms into a business best known to many athletes for watches, cycling computers and other fitness hardware. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the transaction adds software centered on structured coaching, performance analysis and athlete-coach relationships to Garmin’s existing fitness ecosystem.
The two platforms address complementary areas of training. TrainingPeaks is closely associated with structured endurance coaching, while TrainHeroic focuses on strength and performance training, giving Garmin a broader connection to athletes whose routines extend beyond the activities tracked by individual devices. Both services are designed to connect athletes of varying ability levels with coaches and provide tools for managing training and performance.
For Garmin, the acquisition suggests a deeper move into the services surrounding the data its devices already collect. Fitness technology has increasingly become about more than recording workouts: athletes and coaches also need ways to interpret performance information, organize training plans and adjust those plans over time. Owning established coaching platforms could allow Garmin to participate more directly in that part of the training process rather than serving primarily as the hardware and data collection layer.
The transaction also brings a sizable existing organization into Garmin. TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic are headquartered in Louisville, Colorado, and their combined 120 employees will join Garmin’s global workforce. The companies already have a history of working within the broader digital fitness market, and the acquisition gives Garmin access to their established relationships with coaches and athletes rather than requiring it to build comparable communities from the ground up.
What remains unclear from the announcement is how tightly TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic will ultimately be integrated with Garmin’s existing products or whether their experiences will change significantly under new ownership. Still, the strategic direction is notable: Garmin is expanding its position from measuring athletic performance toward helping shape how training is planned and interpreted. For athletes and coaches, the significance of the deal will depend on whether that combination produces more useful connections between training data and coaching without narrowing the flexibility that made the platforms valuable independently.
