The 180-guest riverboat’s westward passage highlights American Cruise Lines’ investment in spacious vessels designed specifically for domestic waterways and longer regional itineraries.
American Cruise Lines’ new riverboat American Encore passed sea trials and began a month-long passage from Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Maryland to the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The vessel departed the shipyard following the trials, travelling along the Eastern Seaboard before a planned Caribbean crossing and Panama Canal transit. Captain Andrew Gillilan and the ship’s officers and crew were supported during the journey by the company’s shoreside operations team and fleet operations centre in Connecticut.
American Encore is part of the operator’s modern American Riverboat series and was built for 180 guests, with private balconies across all accommodation. The company says the vessel offers more space per guest than any other river cruise ship and was built to current environmental standards. Its arrival was intended to strengthen a fleet that included eight riverboats assigned specifically to the Columbia and Snake Rivers.
The accommodation ranges from balcony staterooms to a 1,500-square-foot Signature Suite positioned above the pilothouse on Deck 4. That suite includes three walls of glass, a wraparound balcony, separate living and sleeping areas, a dining space for up to six guests and a bathroom with a freestanding soaking tub. A 600-square-foot Grand Suite adds a separate bedroom and living room, while the 350-square-foot Sky Suite combines panoramic glazing with its own balcony.
American Cruise Lines set American Encore’s sold-out inaugural season to run from May 5, 2026, until mid-November, with Columbia and Snake itineraries ranging from nine to 16 days. The programme included National Parks cruises featuring guided visits to Yellowstone, Glacier and Grand Teton national parks. The vessel’s route towards Astoria, Washington, also illustrates the logistical demands of moving a US-built riverboat from a Maryland shipyard to its operating region on the opposite coast.
The ship joined an expansion programme in which American Cruise Lines said it had introduced 20 vessels over the preceding decade. Sister ships American Anthem and American Grace were slated to begin Columbia and Snake River operations in 2027 and 2028 respectively. By pairing additional capacity with larger suites and dedicated regional deployment, American Encore reflects the company’s strategy of developing domestic river cruising through purpose-built small ships rather than adapting vessels designed for other markets.
