The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has set 11 December 2026 for the museum’s opening, adding a major modern-art institution to the emirate’s cultural district.
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has announced that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is scheduled to open on 11 December 2026. The museum, developed in collaboration with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, will present modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. Its opening adds another substantial institution to Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, where the museum is intended to connect local perspectives with artistic practices from around the world.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is being positioned as a space for encounter and exchange rather than a conventional chronological survey. The release says its collection and programme will bring together perspectives across geographies and generations, with painting, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image and new media among the forms represented. The museum will also offer an Abu Dhabi lens on modern and contemporary art through collections, commissions, research, exhibitions and a multilingual programme.
The building, designed by the late architect Frank Gehry, is located on Saadiyat Island and will contain 30 galleries connected by a central atrium. Ten sculptural cones will rise through the structure, with nine clad in stainless-steel mesh and one in onyx and glass. According to the announcement, the cones will reach heights of up to 88 metres and contribute natural ventilation and shade, while the museum will include 11,600 square metres of interior gallery space and 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas.
The museum’s scale reflects the broader role assigned to Saadiyat Cultural District, which already includes Louvre Abu Dhabi and is also home to the Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi says its collection has been developing since 2009 and will organise works around themes including Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language and Storytelling. Visitors will be invited to follow individual routes through connected periods, places and ideas rather than a single linear account of art history.
The announcement places Guggenheim Abu Dhabi within the international Guggenheim constellation while stressing an identity shaped by Abu Dhabi’s artistic landscape and regional history. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi says public programming is already active across the United Arab Emirates, although further information on the collection and commissions is expected to be announced in the coming months. The scheduled 11 December 2026 opening therefore marks a defined next stage for a project designed to extend the emirate’s cultural offer through a locally rooted, globally oriented museum.
