The planned acquisition of Defacto Technologies would extend Siemens’ semiconductor software deeper into SoC creation as chiplet architectures make manual assembly increasingly difficult.
Siemens has agreed to acquire Defacto Technologies, a Grenoble-based electronic design automation software company specializing in automated system-on-a-chip design creation and integration. The deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, would expand Siemens’ EDA portfolio into an earlier stage of semiconductor development, where engineering teams increasingly face the challenge of assembling more complex designs from growing numbers of components.
Defacto Technologies focuses on register-transfer level, or RTL, design, providing tools that automate SoC assembly, restructuring and power intent management through a unified design database. Siemens plans to connect those capabilities with its existing implementation, verification and signoff tools, creating greater continuity between the initial construction of a chip design and the later processes used to determine whether it can be successfully manufactured and perform as intended.
The acquisition reflects a broader technical challenge created by increasingly configurable SoCs and the semiconductor industry’s move toward chiplet-based architectures. As designs incorporate more intellectual property blocks and interconnections, manually assembling and managing them becomes more time-consuming and introduces additional opportunities for errors. Automating those tasks earlier in development could allow engineering teams to identify timing, connectivity or power-related problems before they become more expensive to address downstream.
For Siemens, the deal is therefore less about adding another isolated design tool than filling a gap in the semiconductor development workflow. Defacto’s technology could allow customers to assess implementation considerations earlier while maintaining information across different stages of design, potentially reducing some of the handoffs and repeated work associated with fragmented engineering processes.
Founded in 2003, Defacto Technologies brings more than two decades of specialization in SoC design automation to Siemens’ broader EDA business. The proposed acquisition arrives as semiconductor complexity is making software infrastructure an increasingly important part of chip development: improvements in computing hardware depend not only on new architectures and manufacturing processes, but also on engineering teams being able to design and verify those systems efficiently. Siemens’ move suggests that automating the earliest stages of SoC creation is becoming another important part of that equation.
